Tanzanians traditionally take care of their elderly at home. There are no nursing homes, no pensions or financial support for them. In recent years, however, more and more elderly in the Ngara District have found themselves alone, with no family help. There are reasons for this:

  • HIV/AIDS has wiped out the middle generation in many families;
  • Young families have immigrated to distant locations;
  • Family members may be unable to care for their elderly because of their own sickness or poverty;
  • False beliefs persist that some elderly people are bewitched.
