Cataract Surgery For the Elders

One of the missions of the Village Angels of Tanzania is to help provide health care services to the village elders who otherwise would not have access to such services. Recently, a team of surgeons visited the village to perform cataract surgery for some of the elders.

The services were provided by a private group of doctors who traveled from far away Dar-es-salaam ( on the other side of Tanzania ) to come to the village. This is the 3rd visit that this group has made over the years. The surgeons travel with all the supplies and instruments needed for the cataract surgery .and the procedures were performed at the village dispensary.

11 village elders were identified as needing the surgical procedure which was carried out over a 3 day period. Elders were checked into the dispensary on the 1st day for screening and preparation. The 2nd day was for the surgery and the 3rd day was for post-op check-ups before being discharged. Prior to the surgery, the condition of one of the elders had progressed so far that she was unable to see out of either eye. You can imagine how happy she was to be able to regain her vision following the surgery. All patients came through the surgeries without any issues and are now in various stages of recovery.

Below are some pictures that document the process from intake to discharge so that you can get a sense of how this effort was carried out. It is through the generous donation of the Village Angels supporters that basic health care needs like this can be facilitated. Thank you for your continued support !!
